whystartedasiaweddingnetwork

Starting Asia Wedding Network has been a very rewarding journey with many (MANY) up’s and down’s. Today, I want to talk to you guys about why I started this wedding platform, and how you too can find a business idea you are passionate about.

I always hear the advice, “find something you are passionate” given to aspiring entrepreneurs. While that’s totally true, I have to add that you need to find something you are passionate about and you see a business opportunity in. I love fashion, beauty, and all things pretty - but building another clothing or beauty e-commerce store was just not something I was going to do because I couldn’t see the opportunity in it. I wasn’t sure what value I could add that REVOLVE or ShopBop didn’t already have. But I did see the gap in the market for weddings - finding your wedding suppliers, shopping for your wedding, getting information about wedding planning, etc. That’s when I found my passion and my opportunity.

But just because you've found your opportunity doesn’t mean you’ve found your business. You’ll need to verify your idea and confirm your hypothesis that there indeed is a market for your idea. For me, that was doing research and speaking to people. I’ll talk about the research part another time. What I want to emphasize is the part about speaking to people and learning about whether your idea will work or not. Not having gone through the wedding planning process yet, I needed to speak to people who did. After having endless conversations with friends about wedding planning (I’m at that age where everyone around me on Facebook is either getting engaged or married), I saw that a lot of the people who I spoke to were using TheKnot, Instagram, Google, or word-of-mouth to find their wedding suppliers, which they were getting frustrated with because:

A) TheKnot only featured vendors in the US

B) Instagram doesn’t allow you to sort by location so you end up looking at suppliers that do not work in your required location. Or if you search with #balimakeupartist and the same makeup artist pops up all the time because they’re the only ones using that specific hashtag.

C) Google solves the location problem (you can search for ‘Bali Makeup Artist’) but many great wedding professionals do not spend a lot of time maintaining their websites, meaning they are less likely to be found on Google.

D) Word of mouth works great if you have the same taste as the person who gave you the recommendation. But if you don’t, then you need to spend time asking another bride - and another bride, and so on. Plus, you don’t want your wedding looking the same as all your friends, right? You want to find that supplier who can give you what you want, unique to your tastes and style.

This not only confirmed my idea that there was a gap in the market, but it made me more confident in my business idea. Of course, there are other wedding platforms in the market, but I’ll leave it to next time to talk about how to differentiate from competition and stand out from the crowd. So for those who are on the search for their next business idea, just remember that your idea will grow from your passion. And from there, you’ll need to look for your opportunity. Once you find that opportunity, that’s when the hard work begins to do your research and find the problem you want to solve!
